Sirius, The Atlantic Ocean, 21 April 1838
Sirius ploughed through the waves like a walrus through treacle. The decks pitched and swayed as the uncaring, clumsy waves lifted her and dropped her.
Patrick was the smallest boy on board, so he was given the job of climbing to the top of the mast as the look-out.
“Can you see Great Western?” Captain Derry asked.
The wind and the rolling ship whipped the mast till the boy was giddy and sick. He forced himself to look back over the stern of the ship. Back to where Ireland lay three thousand miles away.
